A Mentoring Program for Adolescents
Life Plan is a unique approach to mentoring;
First, LIFE PLAN is a market researched, product-based, quality orientated system of studies designed to facilitate interaction between the generations and cultures. It is a kit consisting of a workbook and audio cassettes that provide a year-long, structured sequence of mentoring activities for families and children. Our market research indicates that the sequenced activities concept overcomes the over-powering problem that dooms most every other mentoring relationship to early failure: “what to do next with the child” Also, an adult welfare family is
more likely to respond positively to “Faith and Families” as a result of the positive influence on their child, rather than being classified as an “adopted welfare family.”
Second, LIFE PLAN is work-centered and has specific practical and measurable goals. It is our profound belief that children with a vision of their future will act upon that vision. Conversely, children without a vision behave like they have no future: lazy and listless. The Scriptures tell us that without a vision the people cast off restraint. The program’s mission is to lead the child and his family to the realization that a successful future lies in the world of work: gainful employment or entrepreneurial success. The first stage of that process is a series of interactive discussions that transfer the basic 1k skills” necessary to move into the work-a-day world, The second stage focuses on identifying potential careers and the specific skills needed to reach them.
Third, LIFE PLAN is fully committed to developing and nurturing the families’ and child’s spiritual life and values, the basis of any genuine success and tininess in the child’s maturing life through interaction of a Community Based Organization (CBO).
The COB is in fill control and promotion of this function.
Fourth, LIFE PLAN is structured to provide support for the mentors. Rather than being assigned a child and then cut loose to sink or swim, LIFE PLAN mentors are supported by a sponsoring organization (a church, civic group or business) and a crew of fellow mentors – the M-Tean. When mentors have problems, they have the support necessary to overcome them.
It is assumed that many of the mentors will be maturing and success orientated young men and women from the same neighborhoods and churches as the children they are mentoring. We have designed the program so that they, too, will benefit from the activities and have back-up material for each work session to feel comfortable working with the child. And of course updated material and concept papers arc easy to add to the three ring binder, making for a true life notebook for the participant.
